EF Stories: Lorenzo from Italy at EF Boston
Lorenzo, at the age of 17, made the decision to embark on an academic semester in Boston with EF. Let's delve into his six-month adventure in America!
Tell us about your experience with EF!
I'm Lorenzo, and at the age of 17, I embarked on a remarkable journey from April 24 to September 17, 2022, in the vibrant city of Boston, Massachusetts. During my time there, I attended an international EF school, providing me with the unique opportunity to interact with people from diverse cultures worldwide, ranging from Chile to Japan. What struck me immediately was the sociable and outgoing nature of the people, despite their diverse backgrounds. This aspect was particularly valuable as it allowed me to enhance my English proficiency not only in the classroom but also during leisure and social interactions. It didn't hinder me from fully experiencing the American dream. While wandering the city streets, I couldn't help but notice the rich cultural differences that set Boston apart from any Italian city.
Could you share the top three things you loved most about the city you visited?
Boston is an extraordinary city, encompassing a multitude of diverse places and cultures within its boundaries. You can explore historic landmarks such as Harvard University and MIT, then transition to the bustling downtown area, which serves as the epicenter of the city and is teeming with tourist attractions and breathtaking natural sites.
What activities did you participate in with other students?
We shared numerous experiences both on campus and throughout the city of Boston. Specifically, we went on a boat trip to catch the sunset, engaged in an exciting escape room challenge, attended a Boston Celtics basketball game, and cheered for the Red Sox at a baseball game!
What is the most profound moment you encountered during your time abroad?
It's challenging to pinpoint a single moment as the most profound when you've spent a significant part of your adolescence in Boston, in an environment entirely distinct from what you've always been accustomed to. Undoubtedly, the arrival was an emotionally intense moment, as overnight, you transition to a new daily routine. However, in no time, you adapt, and you never want to return to your old ways. Additionally, saying goodbye to all the people you've met during your experience and, in general, to the city that hosted you for a portion of your life are also emotionally intense moments that are hard to forget.
How has this experience transformed you?
I have evolved into a more independent, mature, and outgoing individual. Every day, I encountered new people from diverse cultures, and I found myself in circumstances where I lived alongside them but lacked the immediate assistance of my parents. I believe this experience significantly contributed to my personal growth.
What advice would you offer to individuals who are considering going abroad with EF or are uncertain about the idea?
To those who are uncertain about leaving, I have just one message: this experience is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I know it might sound like a cliché, but as the years pass, you'll regret not taking this chance. Leaving behind your familiar life to start a new one is undoubtedly challenging, but the rewards of this experience far outweigh any physical or mental hurdles you may face. For those who have already made up their minds to embark on this EF journey, congratulations! You've chosen a path that will profoundly enrich your life, and you'll emerge from this experience as a better, more well-rounded person.
Do you believe you've acquired skills that will be valuable for your future career?
Absolutely, living here for five months at the age of 17 has reshaped my life and my perspective in profound ways.
If you could board a plane right now, where would your next EF destination be?
