Your TOEFL score on the iBT test will be between 0 and 120. On the Essentials test it will be between 1 and 12. On the PBT test it was between 310 and 677. A TOEFL iBT score is calculated by adding together each of the 4 section scores because each skill is equally weighted. Each section – reading, listening, speaking, writing – is worth 30 points. On the TOEFL iBT, you will get a score report overall between 0 and 120, but you will also get a score on each section between 0 and 30.
On the TOEFL Essentials, you will get a score between 1 and 12 on each of the 4 sections and your overall score will be an average of the four section scores with each section equally weighted. Section scores are in whole points whereas the overall average is in half points, so it is possible to get an 8.5 overall, for example. TOEFL Essentials also includes an unscored video statement.
TOEFL scores are available about 10 days after your test date for the iBT and 6 days after your test date for the Essentials test. Scores are valid for 2 years.
Most people need a specific TOEFL score in order to apply to a specific university. The required TOEFL score will vary greatly depending on your university and the degree program you are applying to. Some universities or degree programs have an overall TOEFL score requirement and also a minimum score requirement on one or more of the TOEFL sub-sections. As a general rule, more advanced degrees and more selective universities will have stricter TOEFL score requirements. You can find out what TOEFL score is required by the universities and degree programs you are applying to by contacting the university admission office.
If you took the TOEFL on paper instead of online, your TOEFL score will be completely different. TOEFL PBT scores include only reading, listening, and structure sub-scores. The writing component of the TOEFL PBT is reported separately and has a score of 0 to 6. Most universities that accept a TOEFL iBT score will also accept an equivalent TOEFL PBT score.
TOEFL Junior and TOEFL ITP scores cannot be converted to standard TOEFL scores.
